Things That Make Your Cake More Beautiful
It is of course possible to find many cakes in the trade, but their exorbitant price or their "industrial" taste (in the case of supermarket cakes) can sometimes be discouraging! Never mind! Put your hand in the cake and make your favorite cake (white, chocolate, or other) and trust your creativity. Here are some decor techniques that are easy to master: you'll only need a little patience and good will...
Colorful Candies
This is the winning formula with children ... After spreading on your cake the simple frosting of your choice, decorate with full, full, full, colorful candies: Smarties, skittles, gelatin cubs, etc. You can use sweets to make drawings or just put them everywhere!
The Ganache
Any cake can be enhanced by a rich chocolate ganache: black, white, milk, or colored ... you decide! You will find several kinds of cake decorating supplies UK on the Internet, and the basic recipe is relatively easy to memorize:
- Boil a certain amount of 35% cream (or fresh cream).
- Pour it on double of a good quality chocolate (for example, 200 g of cream for 400 g of chocolate).
- Mix well until the mixture becomes unctuous.
- Pour immediately on the cooled cake.
- Then place in the refrigerator to freeze the ganache.
It is possible to create a "fall" of the most beautiful effect on a cake with floors. Finish your decor with chocolate chips, raspberries, sweets, or anything that goes through your head!
Frosting (More Or Less Colorful)
For those who want to impress the guests and the celeb, a rainbow of colorful frosting is always impressive. Be aware that "ready-made" icing jars do not hold up well, but it's possible to make them in no time. Here is an unmissable and delicious recipe for a cream that works very well with a pocket or a "syringe" socket. You'll need :
- 125 g of butter
- 125 g of vegetable shortening (both at room temperature)
- 500 g of icing sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk to make everything more malleable
- Mix the ingredients very gently with the robot.
- Separate the cream in several small bowls to color them according to your inspiration of the moment.
- Arm yourself with your favorite tool and have fun!
Macaroons Or Other Fine Biscuits
Another very easy decor technique is to buy nice thin biscuits, then to "stick" them on your cake by alternating the kinds and the colors. The delicious macaroons with almonds are particularly impressive, but any other nice biscuit will do! Use your favorite icing as a glue.
Almond Paste Or Fondant
If you believe that decorative flowers and other leaves and characters are only feasible by experienced pastry chefs, think again ... Do you like playing with play dough? Then you will be able to make roses, leaves, snails and other eatable critters! The almond paste or the fondant are all ready, it will only be enough to change the shade with a few drops of food coloring.
For homemade marzipan (much cheaper), here is a basic recipe:
- 175 g icing sugar
- 175 g almond powder (the finest possible, pass it to the grinder if you have one)
- 1 egg white and an aroma of your choice (vanilla, bitter almond) , cinnamon, etc.)

Original Drawings
Finally, here is a technique that requires a little patience, but nothing complicated!
- Search the web (or a book) for the image of a particular character or scene, then print or photocopy it.
- Stick the image on a cookie sheet with a little adhesive tape.
- Cover with plastic film.
- Then take a pipette filled with melted dark chocolate (or syrup with colorful decor found in supermarkets, like "Scribble") and methodically reproduce the drawing.
- When everything is well cured, carefully lift the plastic sheet and return there on your cake already covered with frosting.
- You just have to "color" all using your pocket or syringe socket.
To Finish...
Remember that you will find a lot of ideas and photo or video tutorials if you are unsure of a particular technique (for example, for the use of the piping bag). With a little practice, you will discover that the decoration of cakes is not as difficult as it seems, and you will even develop a lot of pleasure to create new decorations for each anniversary. Do not hesitate to mix the techniques of your choice for a unique and personalized decoration, to use the fruits (fresh or dry), to decorate plastic figurines for the children...
Be careful, however, if you become a "specialist", you could well be named "pastry chef" for all family celebrations ... It's a risk to take!
