Main Cotton Fabrics For Making Clothes

To make clothes, we prefer cotton or linen, two fibers of vegetable origin. But we also use fibers of chemical origin.

The Cotton
Cotton is one of the most exploited fabrics in the world. This is the "basic fabric", the one you handle first when you start sewing and use the most. It has several significant advantages. It is easy to sew, it is resistant and supports multiple washes well. Its price is modest, unlike other fabrics (such as linen). You can find all kinds of patterns: gingham, peas, stripes, flowery fabrics, etc.
It is used to make clothes, accessories and household linen (pillowcases, tablecloths, place mats ...).
There are, however, several types of cotton that you get from printed cotton suppliers and I will focus on two of them: liberty and wax.

The Liberty
Liberty is a kind of cotton that is characterized by its softness because it is pure cotton. It is usually in flowery pattern but not only. I had the good fortune to find, a few years ago, the Drugstore of Lyon liberty with graphic patterns. Know that this exists! For clothes, you can also use it as a skew to finish a solid piece. I did it on a coral linen dress. You can also make some pieces like the collar feet, the inside of the wrists in liberty.
But most of the time, I use the liberty to make accessories. I especially like using it to make bag or pocket linings. Personally, I like to create a surprise for accessories by putting the patterned fabric on the inside and not on the outside, as usual. In any case, do not hesitate to mix the patterns (two or three at most).

The Wax
Wax is another kind of cotton. It is also called "African fabric". It is a colorful fabric with large patterns (most of the time). It is bought, generally, by coupons of 6 yards, or 5.48 m.
The wax is mainly used to make clothes. A coupon of 6 yards allows in this case to achieve (or to achieve) a complete outfit.
You can order it on some sites or buy it in stores. Be careful, however, because in some stores, prices are particularly high. For my part, I already bought wax to make clothes (a dress and a skirt) and for that.  There are all kinds of prices and colors.
You can also use the wax to make accessories (bags, kits, etc.).

Be aware that some coupons are not necessarily used in straight line. Some patterns may run on the longer side, forcing you to use the fabric in the other direction than the right one. This has been the case for this dress.
